A Jewel Thief in Dubai
I wonder if aspirants of the National Novel Writing Month are considering action-thrillers. Maybe this will provide them with some inspiration.
Back in January 4, 2005, devoid of media helicopters and eager reporters, an unlikely raid was taking place at the Yohara offices in the Shangri La, Sheikh Zayed Road.
Maz Khan, a 34-year old Briton of Pakistani origin lead a fast life with 3 different passports and 2 expensive yachts including a 1.5 million Euro Ferrari boat apart from a $500,000 Ferrari car. He established himself in Dubai after successfully swindling millions of dollars from Norwegian and Irish investors, showing them plans and promotional material of fictitious projects.
But when CIDs from the Dubai Police tried to corner him at the hotel, he arranged his assistant to have coffee with the investigators while he sped away in his Ferrari to Abu Dhabi hoping to catch a Doha bound flight. Unfortunately for him, the police caught up, thanks to a flight delay and Maz Khan is all set to spend the rest of his life in a Dubai jail. Not long ago Maz Khan alias Maz Akhtar was seen delivering speeches and offering tips on 'safe investment' as an 'international property and investment specialist' at seminars.
Maz Khan used a fictitious project called 'The Jewel' often vaguely referring to an actual location. A high profile marketing campaign with a super expensive brochure and an extravagant video with Mummy-like special effects was enough to convince over-eager investors to part with millions of dirhams. The video is interesting - expecially considering that close to a million dollars was spent on people wearing Scream like attire watching gigantic monuments pop out of the desert.
Enjoy The Jewel.

I know agencies that worked on marketing material for him - one at least was left with around a million dirhams unpaid.
The really sad thing is that people were sucked in because his projects were were good investment ideas, in lucrative, growing property markets. They just didn't exist.
The fact that he didn't get the hell out of Dubai long before shows his delusion and arrogance.
I have the brochure with me and it is the biggest I have seen. Bigger that even the Dubai Mall one.
Im not sure of them being sound investment ideas - it is difficult to convince people how you can get profits by recreating the 7 wonders of the world in one location and building some villas/towers around them.
The Falcon City which is a rehashed idea of the same looks set for another disaster.
What brochure, the Dubai stuff? I mean the Spain stuff, that on paper was really sound. So long as he had the land and the capital, he and all the early buyers should have made a killing. The market there is buoyant beyond belief.
Ah..I was refering to the Jewel brochure.
Kinda like how the UAE would want things to be, eh? Get expat brain and muscle to build extravagant monuments and then poof, expat brain and muscle disappear to make way for expat money, so that the native elite can buy another 40-foot schooner and embark on vacation to a land that doesn't have these cumbersome values (a la Itisalot). Wot?
Oh bother, Prometheus is just being sour.
The simple fact he got away with what he did shows that he was an amazing, highly talented individual who people felt they could depend on. This is one fact that people seem to forget when they consider everything he did. There are lots of people out there who try and do what he did without success.
Anon,
I fail to see your point of view. You reckon he should be let off because he has ermm.. talent??
'Let off'? Indeed not, although looking back at my last entry I can see why you may think I feel that way. I simply admire his success, which, undoubtedly, requires skill. He was regarded as an 'international property and investment specialist' by so many, surely he had to be talented to acquire such status. However I must confess I have some partiality towards him as I only knew the person he was that his so called 'victims' never saw, and I can honestly say I understand why so many people trusted him.
Fair enough Anon.
i nw this guy he done a fraud in rochdale england uk he was agood friend
I know maz akhtar very well, he is such a nice man...
he is just trapped by Dubai's bad Kings and propaganda because of Maz Akhtar's Success.
i am sure the kings are jealous from him.
i missed u maz.uncle....you are great man......
I worked for him as well and for various reason I wish that they would reduce his time and let him out. This is a man of man talents.
Lucky
I WORKED FOR HIM HE WAS A NICE MAN BUT HE CONNED LOTS OF PEOPLE SO I GUESS WHERE HE IS RIGHT NOW DOING PORRIDGE WAS SELFINFLICKTED SAD AS IT MAY BE HE WAS A NICE PERSON BUT OBVIOUSLY GOT TOO GREEDY AND HIS WIFE IS A BAD PERSON NOT LIKE HIM......................MARBELLA PUERTO JOSE BANUS
I FEEL SAD FOR HIS 3 KIDS WHO ARE NOW DADDYLESS FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES HE WAS A BAD BOY NOW HES 39 OR 40 YEARS OLD IF HE DOES GET OUT OF PRISON HE WILL BE A BROCKEN MAN AS THE U.A.E PRISONS ARE NOT VERY NICE
I KNEW MAZ KAHN, HE WAS MY BUSINESS PARTNER AND FRIEND, UNTIL HE BETRAYED ME. HE WAS BLESSED BY GOD WITH UNUSUAL INTELLIGENCE, BUT HE CHOSE TO USE THIS GIFT FOR EVIL INSTEAD OF GOOD. HE BECAME A LIAR AND A THIEF RATHER THAN GETTING EDUCATED. SO, HE IS EXACTLY WHERE HE BELONGS BECAUSE HE HURT MANY PEOPLE, MAY GOD FORGIVE HIM. IT STRENGHTHENS MY FAITH IN GOD TO SEE BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO BAD PEOPLE. ITS A SHAME THAT ALL HIS FRIENDS CAN'T SHARE A CELL WITH HIM. :D I HOPE HIS WIFE, LEE ANN GETS HERS TOO.
He is lucky to be in jail. I heard that thieves usually have their hand cut:)) I wouldn't dare steal even colored watch faces. I love my hands:))
Lucky
Your uncle is still a great man and like you said I was one of the few who had the chance to know who he really was and all the people he helped. I truly do miss him and I pray that sometime soon he can return to us.
